inspired by the ancient Namibian desert

Mbiri Natural Skincare is a 100% natural skincare range that is inspired by the Namibian desert and the plants and people that inhabit it.

The range not only presents scientifically formulated products but also presents a unique and ancient story from a vast and desolate land…

the story

The vast and desolate Namibian desert and the people and plants that inhabit it are the inspiration behind Mbiri. The core of Mbiri lies in the unique ingredient called Namibian Myrrh.

Namibian Myrrh essential oil is extracted from the resin of the Commiphora wildii plant which grows in the foothills of the Namibian desert, specifically in north west Namibia. This plant is endemic to this region and in the dry seasons it naturally exudes a golden coloured resin which has been used for centuries by the Himba women who live in this arid landscape.

Locally the resin is known as Omumbiri and is used as a traditional perfume ingredient. Omumbiri is now commercially harvested by the Himba women and they earn an income for every precious kilogram that they collect. The harvesters collect the resin from the ground and this insures sustainably of the resource. Mbiri buys Namibian Myrrh essential oil from the community-owned factory and has created a 100% natural skincare range…

Namibian Myrrh is an ancient traditional ingredient and Himba women will teach their daughters where to find it and how to use it. Now that the ingredient is being used to generate an income the hope is that this will keep the tradition alive.

The money the women generate from harvesting Namibian Myrrh resin has become an intricate part of their living and the conservancies that harvest this resin have been registered as community forests which means that the resource will forever belong to the people of this land…

Marula Oil

Marula Oil is harvested in the north central regions of Namibia.
The fruit of the marula tree is traditionally used by the Oshivambo people to make juice, beer and oil, and women predominately harvest the marula fruit. The women that collect and harvest the marula fruit are part of a co-operative called Eudafano Women’s Co-operative (EWC).

Marula oil is extracted from the kernels of the fruit. The fruit is collected and the kernel extracted by the women. The kernels are then taken to the EWC factory in Ondangwa where they are processed by cold pressing them to extract the oil.

Marula oil is rich in linoleic fatty acid, antioxidants and oleic acid, which are essential for the preservation of healthy skin. The oil is easily absorbed into the skin and naturally softens, nourishes and revitalizes

Kalahari Melon Seed Oil

Kalahari Melon Seed Oil comes from the seed of the Kalahari melon (citrullus lanatus), also known as the Tsamma melon or wild watermelon.
The fruit is also wild harvested by the members of the Eudafano Women’s Co-operative. This oil is also processed at the community-owned factory in Ondangwa.

Kalahari Melon is an excellent source of omega-6 essential fatty acids and brings the additional benefit of high phytosterol content.

The rich yellow oil of Kalahari melon seeds has been used traditionally in Southern Africa as a moisturizer and food source.

Namibian Myrrh essential oil

During periods of extreme drought, the Commiphora wildii plant naturally exudes a precious amber coloured resin. This resin is steam distilled to extract the essential oil.
The Himba women of Kaokoland wild harvest the resin and use it as an ingredient in their traditional perfume.

The women now commercially harvest “Omumbiri” and are paid per kilogram collected. The resin is sent to the processing facility in Opuwo, which is owned by the conservancies in the area.

“Omumbiri” is an uplifting and relaxing middle note. The aroma is fresh, smooth, and slightly spicy. It is believed that Namibian Myrrh can be Antibacterial, Anti-inflammatory and a calming or relaxing oil.
